Surfing Wetsuits
Surfing Wetsuits
Designed to handle the unique demands of the Australian coastline, the SALT Of The Sea range of surfing wetsuits balances high-performance flexibility with essential thermal protection. Whether you are chasing summer swells in the tropics or enduring winter sessions in southern waters, our collection provides reliable options for every environment. We focus on durable construction and premium neoprene to ensure your gear moves with you, session after session. From lightweight spring suits to rugged steamers, every piece is tested in real conditions to deliver the comfort and reliability that dedicated surfers expect from their kit.
What is this page best for?
This collection is the go-to destination for finding high-quality wetsuits specifically engineered for surfing. It caters to surfers who need versatile gear that performs across various water temperatures and conditions. Here, you can compare our lightweight Abyss series for high-mobility summer surfs with our insulated Element series for cold-water protection. Beyond full-length steamers, you will find options for Men’s Wetsuits, Women’s Wetsuits, and Kids Wetsuits, making it easy to gear up the whole family for their next session.
Choosing the right thickness
Selecting the correct neoprene thickness is the most important factor for staying comfortable and extending your time in the lineup. Our range covers the following standard surfing requirements:
- 1.5mm Wetsuits: Perfect for tropical climates, summer sessions, or mid-day surfs where sun protection and wind-chill resistance are the main priorities.
- 3/2mm Wetsuits: The industry standard for temperate Australian waters. These suits offer a great balance of warmth for shoulder seasons while maintaining the high stretch needed for paddling.
- 4/3mm & 5/4mm Wetsuits: Purpose-built for cold-water surfing and winter swells. These thicker steamers provide maximum thermal retention for those braving the coldest southern coastlines.
Warmth, stretch and durability
At SALT Of The Sea, we prioritise functional design over unnecessary gimmicks. Our Element series features GBS (Glued and Blind Stitched) seams to significantly reduce water flushing, keeping your core warm in cooler conditions. For those who prioritse unrestricted movement, our Abyss series uses lightweight neoprene and flatlock stitching, ideal for high-activity sessions. While these suits are designed for the surf, their durable construction also makes them a popular choice for those needing cross-over gear for Spearfishing Wetsuits or general Diving Gear in shallower waters.
FAQs
How should my surfing wetsuit fit?
A surfing wetsuit should fit snugly, like a second skin, without any large folds or air pockets under the arms or behind the knees. If the suit is too loose, water will flush through, and you will lose body heat. However, it shouldn't be so tight that it restricts your breathing or your ability to paddle comfortably.
What is the difference between flatlock and GBS seams?
Flatlock stitching is breathable and very flexible, making it ideal for 1.5mm warm-water suits. GBS (Glued and Blind Stitched) seams are first glued and then stitched halfway through the neoprene so the needle never fully penetrates the fabric. This creates a watertight seal that is essential for warmth in 3/2mm suits and thicker.
Can I use my surfing wetsuit for diving?
Yes, surfing suits are highly versatile. While they are designed for surface flexibility, they work well for snorkelling and shallow freediving. If you are doing deeper, technical diving, you may prefer our specialised range of diving gear, but for most recreational water sports, a SALT Of The Sea surfing suit is a great all-rounder.
How do I care for my wetsuit to ensure it lasts?
To maintain neoprene life, always rinse your suit in fresh water after every surf to remove salt and sand. Dry it in the shade, away from direct UV rays, and hang it doubled over a wide-shouldered hanger. Never leave a damp wetsuit in a hot car, as the heat can damage the glue and degrade the neoprene stretch.
